Often aggregate data such as averages or sums over groups is used as a way to protect privacy as individual values are lost in the whole. However, this is not a complete protection. One challenge is algorithmic, if one has suffcient averages of different groupings it may be possible to infer the values of specific indivdiuals based on which groups they belong to. The other is that the use of the aggregate data may not be one that and individual would agree to violating their personal data sovereignty.
